Tongkat Ali and Testosterone: What the Research Actually Shows

Written by the SodaPeak Editorial Desk · Checked by Dr. Janyna Mercado, neuropsychologist · Updated

Quick answer

Tongkat ali (Eurycoma longifolia) is a Southeast Asian root sold for male hormones, stress and exercise. Small studies, usually 200–400 mg a day of a standardized extract for 4 to 12 weeks, have reported modest changes in hormone markers, mood or strength, but the trials are small and mixed. SodaPeak lists tongkat ali powder inside a 1,200 mg blend without an amount, so it cannot be compared with those studies.

Tongkat ali is second on the SodaPeak label, so it is the second-largest share of the blend.

What tongkat ali is

Every page, every journal post, the bottle facts and the ingredients go through review by Dr. Janyna Mercado before they ship. Tongkat ali is the root of Eurycoma longifolia, a slender tree from Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam. In traditional use the root is boiled into a bitter drink. Its marketing name, “longjack,” tells you what it is usually sold for.

The compounds most often named in research are quassinoids, including eurycomanone. Extracts are typically standardized to a percentage of these, which is why the label wording matters: “extract standardized to 2% eurycomanone” is a different product from plain root powder.

What the studies found

Most tongkat ali trials are small: a few dozen people, four to twelve weeks. Several have reported modest improvements in hormone markers or in mood and stress scores, often in men who started with low testosterone or high stress. Others found no clear change.

The NIH review of supplements for exercise and athletic performance covers this category and lands on the same place: interesting, under-studied, and not established (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, “Dietary Supplements for Exercise and Athletic Performance”).

It is also worth separating two claims. “Raises testosterone in men who are low or stressed” is a narrower and more plausible statement than “boosts testosterone in healthy men.” The research is closer to the first.

Doses are the ranges commonly reported; individual studies vary.

Quality and contamination

Tongkat ali is a root that is expensive to harvest, which invites adulteration. Products have been found with little of the herb, and imported preparations have been reported to contain heavy metals such as mercury or lead.

That is an argument for buying from sellers who publish a certificate of analysis for the lot you receive, and for treating vague labels with extra caution.

How SodaPeak lists it

SodaPeak lists “Tongkat Ali Powder (Eurycoma Longifolia Jack) Root” as the second ingredient inside a 1200 mg blend. Two things follow from that.

First, it is powder rather than a standardized extract, at least as printed. Powder is the raw dried root, so gram for gram it carries far less of the active compounds than a concentrated extract.

Second, being second in the list means it is the second-largest share, but no number is published. If the blend were split evenly, tongkat ali would be about 150 mg, below the usual study range and in a weaker form.

What tongkat ali will not do

  • It is not a steroid or a prohormone, and it does not act like testosterone therapy.
  • It will not fix low testosterone caused by a medical condition. That needs a diagnosis, usually from a morning blood test repeated twice.
  • It will not build muscle without training and protein.
  • It is not a treatment for erectile dysfunction, which can be an early sign of heart disease.

Safety and who should avoid it

Short-term use of standardized extracts appears well tolerated in the small trials published. Longer-term safety is not established. People with hormone-sensitive conditions, liver or kidney disease, or who take prescription medicine should ask a doctor first, and it is not for women who are pregnant or nursing.

The FDA’s consumer guide is a good reminder that supplements are not reviewed for safety or effectiveness before sale (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, “Dietary Supplements”).

Powder, extract or “100:1”: reading the form

Three words on a label change what you are buying. “Root powder” is dried, milled root. “Extract” means the root was soaked and concentrated, usually described by a ratio such as 10:1 or 100:1. “Standardized extract” goes further and guarantees a percentage of a named compound.

A 200 mg standardized extract and 200 mg of plain powder are not the same product, and the research that people quote for tongkat ali almost always used the standardized form. When a label simply says “powder” inside a blend, the honest reading is that you do not know what you are taking.

That is not unique to this product. It is the normal state of the men’s supplement aisle, which is why the few brands that publish amounts and standardization stand out.

A sensible way to test it

  1. Get a baseline

If hormones are the real question, ask for a morning testosterone test before you start.

  2. Fix the basics first

Sleep, protein, training and alcohol move testosterone more than most supplements.

  3. Use one product at a time

Stacking blends makes it impossible to know what did what.

  4. Give it 8 weeks

Most studies run four to twelve weeks.

  5. Re-test or stop

If nothing changed in your notes or your bloods, stop paying for it.

What moves testosterone more than any capsule

ChangeWhy it matters
Sleeping 7–9 hoursMost daily testosterone is produced during sleep; short sleep lowers it measurably in healthy young men
Losing excess body fatFat tissue converts testosterone to estrogen; weight loss often raises levels
Lifting weightsStrength training supports hormone health and, more importantly, builds the muscle you actually want
Drinking less alcoholHeavy drinking lowers testosterone and disrupts sleep
Treating sleep apneaUntreated apnea is strongly linked to low testosterone

None of this is exciting, and none of it can be sold in a bottle. It is still where the effect sizes are.

Questions to ask before buying any tongkat ali product

  1. Is it an extract or plain root powder?
  2. What is the extract ratio, and is it standardized to eurycomanone?
  3. How many milligrams are in one serving?
  4. Where was the root grown and processed?
  5. Is there a certificate of analysis, including heavy metals, for this lot?

A company selling a good tongkat ali product can answer all five in a sentence each. A company selling a blend usually cannot answer the third.

The bottom line

Tongkat ali is one of the more interesting herbs in men’s formulas, with small studies suggesting modest effects on hormone markers, mood and stress, mostly at 200–400 mg a day of a standardized extract.

SodaPeak includes it as a powder inside a blend with no published amount, which means those studies cannot be applied to this product. If tongkat ali is what you want to try, a single-ingredient product with a stated amount and standardization makes the test honest.
